A Challenge for PEACE...

These days, as the International Day for Peace, January 30th, comes nearer, a lot of marvellous songs made for the purpose come to memory. Everybody remembers "Imagine" by John Lennon, but this is not the one I want to bring into account today. There were other further times when a lot of people were giving their best to achieve peace for the infamous war in Vietnam. They marched along streets and avenues to demand their politicians to stop the fight. The Hippy Movement also came to life at this time and with the same aims. At the end, they got it and the Empire lost her first war. Joan Baez's "Blowing in the wind" was the anthem that encouraged them to continue. I leave it here. Enjoy...

These days, when we have a look at the press, one may imagine that everything is lost. Bankrupts, unemployment, decreasing economy rates accompany us at every sight. “Oh my God, the world must be coming to an end” tends to be a general opinion. But there is a hope. We need a laughter and that is what our king gave us yesterday. He also brought hope for all of his people in darker times. He is no more than a normal man among thousands and life goes on… So, the only I dare to say today is: “Thank you Your Majesty…”

Easter is celebrated every spring. It is always celebrated on a Sunday. Easter has its roots in many traditions gathered from many parts of the globe.

There are many symbols of Easter. German settlers to Pennsylvania brought with them the story of the Easter Bunny. Children believed that if they were good, the Easter Bunny would lay a nest of colored eggs. Because rabbits are known for producing a lot of young, especially in the springtime, they symbolize new life. As the Easter Bunny custom spread across the country, it led to other traditions such as Easter baskets and gift giving.

Birds lay a great number of colorful eggs in the spring which has brought about the use of Easter eggs, egg dyeing and egg hunts. Long ago, the egg was honored during many springtime festivals. Egg dyeing was popular in ancient times and continues to be popular today. To the Christian, the egg represents the rebirth of the earth and of man.

Ham is the traditional food of Easter. This type of pork is popular throughout the world. In many cultures, the pig is a symbol of prosperity.

As you have learned, Easter in America is a mixture of a lot of cultures, stories, and Christian beliefs. However, the reason for the celebration remains the same - to call to mind our crucified Jesus who rose from the dead to save us.

Violence against women

November the 25th is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. It was started by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999. The UN asked governments, international organizations and NGOs to raise global awareness of this terrible and widespread problem. This is particularly important in the many countries where the issue of violence against women is hidden. Women all over the world are the victims of domestic violence, rape, psychological torment and other forms of abuse. There is no country in which women are free from violence. The UN said violence against women is a barrier to achieving equality, human rights, development and peace.
International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is observed on November 25 because of a horrific historical event. On this day in 1960, three sisters were brutally killed in the Dominican Republic. The Mirabal sisters were political activists. They campaigned against the corrupt government of that time. Throughout their political activity, the women and their husbands were put in prison and beaten many times. This did not dampen their desire for political change. President and dictator Rafael Trujillo ordered their execution. The sisters became known as the "Unforgettable Butterflies". They symbolized the victimization of women and were commemorated in novels, poems, songs and books.

Halloween is around the corner, on October 31st is celebrated in the British Isles, the United States and Canada by children and adults going door to door while wearing costumes and begging sweets and playing jokes. (Treat: Sweets or trick:jokes) Let's now read about the origins of this festival. Halloween celebration and traditions are rooted in Samhain, an old Irish festival celebrated by the Celts which honored the dead and marked the beginning of winter and the start of a new year.
Then in the ninth century, Christians declared November 1st All Saints Day to honor saints who did not yet have their own day of homage. So there was a special mass called All hallow mass and the night before was known as All Hallows Eve: Halloween. The origins of trick or treat. One version is that on All Souls Day, early Christians went door to door begging for "soul cakes", offering a prayer for the giver's soul in return. Others say that on Samhain, revelers wore masks representing the dead, and went from house to house and collected food that had been reserved for the departed. Halloween costumes: People used to believe than on All Hallows Eve, the line between the dead and the living weakened, allowing spirits to re-enter the world and possess the living. Apparently, fearful folks wore the garb or ghouls and ghosts to avoid an encounter with the spirits. What is the origin of Jack-o-lantern? According to folklore, a man named Jack who once tricked Satan was barred from heaven and hell when he died. He was condemned to wander in darkness, with just one coal to light his way. This is why we put candles inside carved pumpkins at Halloween. There are similar celebrations around the world, from Mexico's Day of the Dead to Sicily's Festival of the Dead. On Wednesday, May 20th, we had the trip that had been planned to Valverde and Riotinto, according to the project we participated in, just following the presence of the Bristish Empire in the province of Huelva.
We visited some important British buildings that still remain in Valverde and Riotinto. They made clear to our students that the presence and influence of the Empire in our land was powerful and strong. They could find the main architectural features that define a British Victorian building.
We must be very grateful to Mrs. Rosa Parreño. She made the best of her job to let us visit Don Francisco Arroyo´s home, a splendid and well preserved English house in Valverde. Thanks also to this veteran priest who gave us all the facilities to visit his home.
Our gratitude must also go to Valverde del Camino Town Hall for the way in which they served us and to Excelentísima Diputación de Huelva who gave life to this project.
Finally, thanks must be given to Pedro, my companion at the Department, who took the marvellous photos that accompany these lines.

TRAINING FOR CHRISTMAS

This is one of the first training sessions we did to prepare the end of the term.

As everybody can see, voices are not tuned at all. At the end, the results were better. God almighty!

In this case, thanks must be given to the Departments of Music and English. Both have collaborated to achieve the final target.

Thanks also to the vast majority of our students who tried to do it the best they could.

A day at the theatre

On the 10th November, the Department of English organized a trip to Huelva: A new experience for young students who had never watched a play in English. Students from 3º and 4º of E.S.O went to Huelva to enjoy and learn with a wonderful play called "Daily News", performed by Recursos Educativos.

The play is a situation comedy based in a TV studio and the story is as follows: Alf, Chloe, Jack and Rupert work in a news bulletin. Changes in the company make the ambition of the different characters have opposite interests that will end up with a funny fight.

Students had a great time and after watching the play we had lunch at "Plaza las Monjas", a tasty hamburguer and had a walk along Concepción Street. Finally we returned to Niebla. It was a fantastic day out.

"I STILL HAVE A DREAM".

Some generations may pass away before being able to measure the real dimension of the event that has happened today in the history of the United States of America.
Who would have dreamed of it…? But, sometimes, the dreams come true and Barack Obama is in office in the White House.
There was a prophet who dared to have this dream, Martin Luther King. How happy he would have been if he had lived this date. Here I include a link to his historic speech at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on August 28th, 1.963.
Anyway, the world must not forget that only 45 years ago an old black lady should give her seat on a bus to a young white lad in some states of the Union, the same where children should play under infamous signs that stated “FOR WHITES ONLY”.
No, THE WORLD MUSTN´T FORGET.

Nunci and Marina are just distributing them from their office.
To begin this year, we have chosen “The Abandoned House” by Burlington. It just follows the mystery path we began the last year.
I encourage my students to go for them as soon as possible to begin our readings together with the Unit 3.

Undoubtfully, Internet is a good resource to practise English. Students find useful and amazing the use of this powerful tool, regardless the time used to start the computers at the beginning of a class, which is a handicap.
This year, we must be grateful to all their teachers at school who taught them to use it properly.
Some of them can be seen here just practising “the time” in class and sending their homework to the teacher by e-mail.

As every year, together with our fair, we have celebrated Halloween.

Students in 2º A have chosen "ENGLAND" as the main subject of their class decorations this year and, this way, Halloween has taken place in one of the corners in the class. This is only the beginning. Let us wait and see the results at the end of the year.
